1. Agreeing to these terms
By using the Nihontekini app, its servers or this website you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you download the app from the App Store, Apple’s standard licence agreement also applies; where the two differ, these terms add to it. If you do not agree, please do not use Nihontekini.
2. The service
Nihontekini is a Japanese flashcard app for iPhone. You can use it as a guest, with everything stored on your phone, or with an account that adds backup, sync across devices and connections to AI agents. We may add, change or remove features over time.
3. Your account
You sign in with a working email address, or with Apple or Google. Keep access to that email or account safe: anyone who can receive your sign-in codes can sign in as you. One account is for one person. You must be at least 13 to create one.
4. Your decks and notes
You own the decks, cards and notes you create, including those you import from a chatbot or that an agent adds for you. You give us permission to store, process and sync that content only so we can run the service for you.
You are responsible for what you import. Only add content you have the right to use, and do not use Nihontekini to store anything illegal or harmful.
5. Chatbots and AI agents
Nihontekini works with chatbots and agents run by other companies, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Your use of them is governed by their own terms. We do not control what they produce and cannot promise that their answers are correct, so check what you import.
An agent you connect over MCP acts on your behalf within the permissions you choose: it may read your decks and progress, add, edit, suspend or delete cards, and make quizzes. You are responsible for what it does with your account. Batches an agent adds can be undone for 7 days, and you can revoke an agent at any time in the app.
7. Dictionary data
Meanings, readings, kanji details, stroke order and example sentences come from open projects, used under their licences. Data from them is shared under the same terms:
- JMdict and KANJIDIC2, from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- KanjiVG, by Ulrich Apel, under CC BY-SA 3.0.
- Tatoeba, under CC BY 2.0 FR.
8. Fair use
Please do not:
- Try to get around rate limits or plan limits, or overload or disrupt our servers.
- Scrape the service or its dictionary in bulk, or resell access to it.
- Access another person’s account or data without permission.
- Use the service to break the law or to harm others.
9. Our app
The Nihontekini app, its design, Awawa-chan and this website belong to Maksym Sai. These terms let you use them for your own learning; they do not transfer any ownership.
10. Availability and changes
We work to keep Nihontekini running, but it may sometimes be unavailable. Studying works offline, so your daily reviews do not depend on our servers.
11. Ending your use
You can stop using Nihontekini and delete your account at any time in the app. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription; cancel that in your Apple ID settings. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms; where we reasonably can, we will tell you first and let you export your decks.
12. No guarantees
Nihontekini is provided as is. We do our best to make cards accurate and scheduling useful, but we cannot guarantee that the content is free of errors or that you will reach a particular level. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law where you live.
13. Changes, law and contact
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect. These terms are governed by the laws of Ukraine. Questions: help@nihontekini.app.
